Tottenham Hotspur fans are beginning to be fed up with goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and his litany of errors. He is one of the best pure shot stoppers in the Premier League, but the Italian goalkeeper has honestly cost Spurs more points in the league this season than he has saved. And after making two more comedic errors in an embarrassing blowout loss to bottom feeders Nottingham Forest - while throwing his teammates under the bus again - both Spurs and the fan base are thinking about moving on from Vicario.
The biggest dream replacement for Vicario in the 2026 summer and winter tranfer windows would be James Trafford. Newly minted at Manchester City after an amazing time at Burnley, Trafford is the next big thing in goal in English football, but he is buried behind Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Manchester City are not going to want to sell him unless they absolutely have to, but if he keeps sitting on the bench for the coming months, he could force City's hand into a summer 2026 transfer and become the ideal Vicario replacement.
Gregor Kobel and Mike Maignan are world class
Mike Maignan has been linked to various big clubs on an expiring contract. For a small fee, Tottenham could pry him away six months before free agency opens, doing a similar move to what Bayern Munich did a couple of years ago when they plucked Yann Sommer in the winter from Borussia Monchengladbach. Maignan is a similar quality keeper and has made a career out of winning league titles with times that would not have won without him.
Gregor Kobel has not won any league titles at Borussia Dortmund, but the Swiss goalkeeper is still young and has his reputation intact despite playing on a horrid team both in terms of coaching and personnel.
He never lets his head drop and, unlike Vicario, is a real leader while minimizing mistakes and being an even better shot stopper. If there is a snowball's chance in heck that Kobel wants out of Dortmund and will take Spurs over another elite club, then forget all about Trafford and go for him instead.
The last two possible Vicario goalkeeping replacements for Tottenham Hotspur in 2026 are Andiy Lunin and Diogo Costa. Lunin is ready to start for almost any team in Europe and has a Champions League winning track record; it's just that he is stuck behind literally the best keeper in the world in Thibaut Courtois. He might even be the best player on this list.
Meanwhile, Costa is a penalty saving specialist at FC Porto and an accomplished international player at Portugal with a whole lot of future upside. He is worth placing on the Tottenham transfer wish list.
