Tottenham have been in need of additional numbers at center back, and they may have just gotten one in Sebastian Caceres.

The Uruguayan defender has been eyed up by the club for a few weeks now, with Football Insider reporting Spurs’ interest two weeks ago.

Now, Fernando Esquivel has taken to X with an update on the situation:

According to the announcement, Tottenham have sent a ‘formal offer’ to Club America, and the agent/player have both given the ‘green light’ for the deal.

The club will now analyze the situation and ‘respond in the coming days’.

Spurs’ backline has been left in a precarious situation in recent times, with starter Micky van de Ven out for the foreseeable future with a hamstring injury, Ben Davies with an ankle knock, and Cristian Romero suspended for the next three games.

Heading into the season there were concerns about a lack of squad depth in the position, and it seems those concerns became reality as Spurs will now be looking to call up a number of youth players for their upcoming matches.

A number of other defenders have been eyed up by the club over the past few months, including Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah and Galatasaray’s Victor Nelsson.

Caceres’ market value currently stands at just over £3m according to Transfermarkt, making him a very inexpensive option for Spurs. This means that, even if Club America slightly raise the price, Tottenham should be looking to sign an additional player for the back line.

The move seems to have been made in anticipation of interest from other clubs, and if completed quickly could guarantee Spurs more squad depth at the start of January. Ange has previously spoken about the advantage of getting deals done at the start of the transfer window, and it seems the club’s management and technical directors are heading his advice:

“The January window, like for every club, is an important one. My view on the January one is that if you can get your business done early in the window it certainly is more helpful because you leave it until the end of January and sometimes what you try to gain you’ve missed that opportunity by waiting a whole month.”

News of the deal should be released in the coming days. Hopefully a low price can be agreed upon which might allow Spurs to spend big on a higher profile player in addition to Caceres.
