Chelsea’s academy product Trevoh Chalobah is looking more likely to leave the club in January, which could be perfect timing for Tottenham to swoop in and reinforce their defensive ranks.

Chalobah was on the verge of joining Bayern Munich on a loan deal this summer before talks broke down. Now, a tip from Fabrizio Romano seems to indicate that Chelsea will be open to selling in the coming months.

Previous reports indicate that Tottenham had expressed interest in the 24-year-old, and given the lack of first-team defensive signings since it’s likely the interest is still there.

Spurs have had a dream of a start to the campaign but supporters know that one injury, especially to the backline, could be detrimental. Our only real alternatives for center defense are Eric Dier and Ben Davies, but fans would be uneasy to see them start against any team.

Eric Dier is also continuing to be linked with a move away in January. Previously, a switch to Sporting seemed likely, but new information has surfaced that indicates former Spurs manager Jose Mourinho has listed Dier as a transfer priority. Either way, it seems unlikely he’ll be here long.

The other option, Ben Davies, has started just one game for us all year: our one and only loss, to Fulham, in the Second Round of the Carabao Cup. Trevoh is a young player with Premier League experience. Chelsea have extensive options in the back too, and at this point in his career, Chalobah will be looking to get regular minutes.

As such, Spurs need to seriously consider making a bid before Bayern’s interest is reinvigorated. If the deal doesn’t fall, Spurs could go after their previous summer target, Lloyd Kelly. The player seemed keen to make a move to North London, but the asking price of £20m fell short of Bournemouth’s valuation.

If Spurs could somehow acquire one, or magically, both of these players, Ange’s defensive options would be incredible and the squad depth would more closely resemble that of a title-competing side.
