Galatasaray’s bid for Ndombele demonstrates historic fall from grace
By Gary Pearson
Galatasaray has reportedly submitted a second bid for Tottenham’s Tanguy Ndombele, worth about €8 million, demonstrating his historic fall from grace.
Ndombele cost Tottenham about £54 million (€63 million) just four years ago. The Frenchman is now worth an eighth of that if the Turkish side’s bid is accepted.
Tottenham will probably reject Galatasaray’s recent bid. However, they can’t expect much more for a player whose value on the open market has plummeted over the years.
Ndombele was the player tasked to alter the club’s fortunes. The world was expected of him after he signed his grossly swollen contract, paying £200,000 weekly.
That’s still the joint-most on Tottenham’s payroll, soon to be the most if Harry Kane leaves, which most believe will be the case.
In retrospect, it’s easy to cast judgement and dole out blame. There’s a lot to go around.
While Tottenham is unavoidably culpable for offering him the financial keys to the kingdom, Ndombele must shoulder most of the criticism.
Knowing your value has diminished significantly should inspire Ndombele to do better and work tirelessly to save face.
One of the main criticisms of the Frenchman is his lack of character and absence of fighting spirit. He capitulated during his first stint at Tottenham, which splashes uncertainty over whether he has the temperament to bounce back and redeem himself.
Ange seems to think Ndombele can enjoy a resurgent season at Tottenham. Hopefully, he’s right, as the Frenchman is in last-chance saloon territory.
That’s if Tottenham decides to keep him. Based on the feeble €8 million bid Galatasaray just submitted, does Tottenham have any other choice?
Selling Ndombele for €8 million feels pointless. It’s a dollar amount that doesn’t move the needle for Tottenham.
Based on recent developments, seeing Ndombele stay at Tottenham becomes more likely.
That is, unless Spurs are tired of his listless antics. In that case, receiving €8 million to rid themselves of an unmotivated, apathetic, overpaid liability is a positive outcome.
If he does stay, he has a mammoth uphill battle to return to first-team prominence.
