As the World Cup continued for a third day on Tuesday, three Tottenham players took the pitch to very uneven results and performances.

With a dozen Tottenham Hotspur players participating in the World Cup, every day should bring some Spurs news. On Tuesday, three Tottenham stars were in action, as Argentina, Denmark, and defending champions France all played. However, the results were quite mixed for the teams and the players.

Romero is rusty in Argentina upset

The biggest news of the day and likely to be the biggest upset of the entire tournament, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia beat Argentina 2-1. Although Argentina put the ball in the net on four different occasions, only one of the four goals stood, and La Albiceleste fell to defeat.

Even worse than losing for Cristian Romero, the Spurs defender was beaten on Saudi Arabia’s first goal.

Romero, who has been criticized by some for not playing the last month with Tottenham, yet starting for Argentina, looked off the pace and underprepared. Whereas many players are in top condition, with European seasons in full swing, Romero’s layoff has left him a step slow to start the tournament.

Argentina and Tottenham will hope the big defender rounds into form and shape as both teams are better with Romero performing.

Hojbjerg and Denmark are not quite off the mark

Whereas Romero and Argentina lost, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Denmark managed a draw with Tunisia. Hojbjerg was tidy in possession and had a decent effort on target from range, but he was underwhelming overall.

Perhaps the biggest contribution from Hojbjerg on the day was his tackle in the box on Mahamed Drager, which was deemed clean and likely saved a goal for Denmark. It was not Pierre Hojbjerg‘s best performance, but it was better than Romero’s, and one point is better than none for Denmark.

Tottenham captain Lloris leads defending champions France

Spurs skipper Hugo Lloris is again wearing the armband for France as Les Bleus looks to defend their trophy. Unfortunately for Lloris, his day got off to an inauspicious start as Australia picked France apart for an easy goal, and French defender Lucas Hernandez was injured in the process.

For Lloris, he had little chance as the ball was quickly crossed and then finished back where it came from in textbook fashion.

Fortunately for Lloris and France, that goal was the biggest highlight for the Aussies as France turned it on and cruised to a 4-1 victory. Although Lloris was beaten a couple of times, he only conceded once, and France again looks to be a tournament favorite.

On Wednesday, the big news will be about the scans of Harry Kane‘s ankle, but Ivan Perisic and Croatia play too, as the World Cup continues and Spurs continue to represent.
