Reasons to believe Son is about to shine again for Tottenham

It has not been the start to the season that Heung-min Son wanted; however, there are some clear signs that Son is about to shine again for Tottenham Hotspur. 

Through six games last season, Son was already starting to roll for Spurs, with three goals, despite missing a match with a knock picked up on international duty. This season through six games, the South Korean has struggled, having still not found the net with a goal that counted. Notwithstanding his zero goals or assists through six games, there were a few clear signs against Fulham that Spurs’ star is about to take off again.

Son was a driving force on Saturday for Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur played their most complete match since the first week of the season against Fulham, and a big reason for that success was the play of the South Korean forward. Sonny did more in 83 minutes against Fulham than in the previous three matches combined.

For the first time in weeks, it looked like Son was looking for the ball and commanding passes to come his way. His 55 touches were the most he has had this season, as were the 45 pass attempts and 37 pass completions.

Son was so much more lively against Fulham. Those 37 completed passes are just five fewer passes than he had in the previous three games combined.

Beyond the touches and passes were the efforts to carry the ball forward that accompanied his play. Son had 34 carries, which was his highest total since week one. Sonny even completed his first successful dribble of the season, which he is known for in his play.

His progressive play also led to opportunities, with Son getting four shots and hitting the crossbar.

With his play active and the opportunities coming, Son should be about ready to take off, especially with one of his favorite opponents coming next weekend, Manchester City.

Son does have a strong record against the Cityzens

Maybe the best news for Tottenham is that they are playing Manchester City. While most teams would be a bit trepidatious coming into this game, Spurs have every reason to be confident, especially Son.

In 15 career games against Manchester City, Son has seven goals and three assists. Those seven goals are tied for the third most by Son against any opponent, and Son has only scored more against Borussia Dortmund – 9 goals in 12 games – and Southampton – 12 goals in 16 games.

The only thing Son has more of than goals against City is wins, having beaten City eight times in 15 games, which is another positive sign for Son and Spurs.

So the golden boot winner may not have scored yet in this campaign. However, there are reasons in his play and the schedule to believe that the drought will soon be over.
