Saturday EPL results put early Sunday pressure on Tottenham Hotspur

It is only the fourth match out of 38 for Tottenham Hotspur, but after the results on Saturday, there is early pressure on Spurs to keep pace in the Premier League.

With seven points from nine, including a big road point at London rival, Chelsea, Tottenham has started well. Although not perfect after three matches like last season, in some ways, Spurs are in a better position than they were at this juncture last season. However, like last season, that early success could be for naught if Spurs trip up in a winnable week four matchup—particularly given Saturday’s results.

Everyone Tottenham will battle won on Saturday.

Both above and below Tottenham in the table, everyone that Spurs figure to battle with for the top four won on Saturday. Arsenal and Manchester City came from behind to win at home, staying above Tottenham in the early season table.

Chelsea won with just ten men against Leicester City, and both Manchester United and Liverpool seem to have recovered from early season hiccups. United navigated a tricky three points on the road at Southampton, and Liverpool made an early season statement with a convincing 9-0 win over Bournemouth.

Beyond the traditional powerhouses, Brighton stayed unbeaten and moved to 10 points with a win over Leeds. Leeds drops below Spurs on goal differential but still has seven points, the same as Chelsea and Tottenham.

If Spurs lose, they may still be in fourth place, depending on how Newcastle does against Wolves, but a lot of early success and momentum will be lost.

Two back of first after four games is a lot different than five points behind, especially when it is Arsenal in first. Likewise, given their early woes, being only one point up on Manchester United and two points on Liverpool would not be a good sign.

It is a game Spurs should win, and winning the games you should, is one measure of a championship-caliber team; hopefully, on Sunday at City Ground, Tottenham measures up.
