Why Tottenham must push on after an impressive start?

Now three games into the 2022/23 season, Tottenham has made a strong start to the campaign, with now the time to build on our good form and send a message to the rest of the league.

After three matchdays, Spurs sit fourth with two wins and a draw, one of seven teams to remain unbeaten in the league.

Despite a slightly rocky start, a convincing 4-1 opening day win over Southampton got Antonio Conte’s side off the mark ahead of a tough trip to Chelsea.

Admittedly, as is often the case, we were second best at Chelsea and in truth, didn’t deserve to come away with anything; however, we did, and that’s all that matters.

Tactical versatility and personnel changes from Conte, culminating in a 96th-minute equaliser from Harry Kane, saw Tottenham take a massive point from our London rivals, making a statement to the rest of the league that we won’t roll over and be beaten.

Finally, last Saturday’s early kick-off saw us host Wolves at N17. Despite being dominated by the visitors in the first half, perhaps slightly, fortunately, we entered the second period on level terms.

To play up to a footballing cliché, it really was a game of two halves, as after both Kane and Son hit the woodwork, the Englishman was on hand to score the game’s only goal and secure a vital three points.

At this point, considering our opening games, Conte must be elated with two wins and a draw from three. However, now we must kick on and continue to pick up results with tough fixtures on the horizon.

Tottenham has a chance to make a little run to end the month

Tottenham faces trips to Nottingham Forest and West Ham before hosting Fulham in the next three, all arguably winnable games.

For a newly promoted side, Forest has made a strong start, and despite losing to Newcastle on an opening day, a victory over West Ham and a draw at Everton at the weekend will leave Steve Cooper’s side high on confidence.

Moreover, after 23 years outside the Premier League, Tottenham’s visit is the first marquee Premier League match to take place at the City Ground in decades, so fans and players alike will be up for this one.

But in reality, for Tottenham, there are no excuses for dropping points to a newly promoted team, so Antonio Conte must ensure his side is prepared for a hard-fought battle this weekend if we want to emerge victors.

Just three days later, Spurs face a shorter trip to West Ham, and despite a torrid start to the season leaving them bottom with three losses from three, they will be keen to cause an upset in a London derby.

But no matter the team, Spurs should revel in facing a side yet to pick up a point, and again, we must ultimately use our newfound squad depth to outclass the Hammers.

Then, perhaps our easiest fixture of the three, we face Fulham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

As another newly promoted side, Fulham has made a strong start to 2022/23; however, if Conte has aspirations of another top-four finish and silverware, this should be a routine win for Spurs.

These next three games are of utmost importance for Conte and Spurs, as looking even further ahead, we must build momentum ahead of three challenging fixtures.

After Fulham, Spurs travel to Manchester City, host Leicester, then go to Arsenal for a North London Derby, so we must make the most of a relatively friendly first six games and put points on the board.

Of course, there are no easy games in the Premier League, but there are certainly some more favourable than others, and it can be argued we have at least two games that fall into this bracket from our next three.

Tottenham must build on this excellent start to the season and continue our fine form into the forthcoming games before the real tests begin.
