Little margin for error for Tottenham and others in EPL

With the race for both the top four and the title about to go into the final weeks, there is little margin for error for Tottenham or anyone else fighting in the Premier League.

This end to the Premier League season could be fantastic for the average Premier League fan. Manchester City and Liverpool are both set to go head-to-head over the final nine weeks for the title, with only two points separating them. Likewise, the race for fourth place will be intense, with four teams within six points of the coveted final Champions League ticket. The competition is fierce for the teams battling to find one of the spots at the top of the league, and there is no margin for error.

Top teams not dropping points

If we look at teams one through six in the table, those six teams have won 24 of those 30 games over their last five matches. The top teams have been so on form that it is the two Manchester teams, City and United, who have tied for the most dropped points over the last five matches at four.

Liverpool has not only won their last five matches, but their streak also stretches to nine straight matches won. The Reds last dropped points back on 2 January in a 2-2 draw against Chelsea. Speaking of the Blues, they have won five straight, last dropping points in a 1-1 draw against Brighton on 18 January.

Tottenham needs to learn from Liverpool

That streak from Liverpool has been significant for two reasons. First, it allowed the Reds to capitalize on City dropping four points and make a real title race. Second, had Liverpool lost any of those games, the four points dropped by City would not have mattered as much, as their chance to catch the Manchester club would have been irreparably damaged.

The point is that there is very little to no margin for error at this point in the season if a team is going to reach its goals. This is hopefully the kind of mentality that Antonio Conte is instilling in his team and producing the type of performances from Tottenham necessary to overcome Arsenal and take fourth place.
