Hungry Tottenham Hotspur jump on Brighton in first-half

After the international break, Tottenham Hotspur looked hungry for goals in the first half against Brighton in the FA Cup, taking a 2-0 lead into the half.

After another international break, there was a chance that Antonio Conte‘s side would look a little rusty early on against Brighton. However, the Seagulls were a bit sloppy early in the game, and Spurs made them pay as a result. Two quick strikes from Tottenham have Spurs XI feeling good at the break.

Kane with a beautiful curler

Tottenham started quick, looking to break whenever they took the ball from Brighton. Heung-min Son, Lucas Moura, and Harry Kane have all been targets for hold-up play, and then the ball has gone immediately forward from there. The tempo early from Tottenham had Brighton flustered, and mistakes were bound to happen.

Kane had just missed a half-chance as Brighton had gifted him the ball near the top of the box, but his touch to control the ball was slightly off, and Robert Sanchez recovered. Given a second chance, Kane would not let it go by again.

The play started with a poor touch from Adam Webster in the back, which an alert Son jumped on stealing possession. Son quickly played the ball to Hojbjerg, who saw Kane in front of him and hit it into Kane’s feet. Spurs talisman took a touch, looked up, and knew exactly what he was going to do. Harry struck the ball perfectly, and it curled past a sprawling Sanchez into the top corner for the 1-0 lead less than 15 minutes into the match.

It was a deserved lead and a worthy goal for Kane.

Royal doubles the lead for Tottenham

Only about 10 minutes after Kane had scored, Emerson Royal was played in from his half and ran the length of the pitch to the end line. Solly March did well-going stride for stride with Royal trying to prevent the cross. Unfortunately for March, as he tried to block Royal’s cross at the end line, he instead deflected it up over Sanchez and into the net for a 2-0 Spurs lead.

The goal was called an own-goal for March, but the lead was deserved, and the play surely will boost Royal’s confidence.

From two ahead, Spurs continued to hunt and get some opportunities. Kane missed a tiny chip, which Son then missed with a header as well. Harry Winks had a couple of shots go high and wide, and Emerson could not finish a nice little layoff from Son.

While Brighton could not find the mark, they did have a couple of chances, reminding Tottenham the game is far from over. If Spurs can maintain the intensity and drive for goals they had in the first half, they should run away with the game. If Spurs fall into a shell, well, anything can happen. One thing is for sure after 45-minutes, the game is Tottenham’s to lose.
