Tottenham and Lyon “set to reach agreement” on Ndombele loan deal
By Gary Pearson
All signs point to Tottenham and Olympique Lyonnais reaching an agreement in the Tanguy Ndombele negotiations, as the Frenchman arrived in Lyon prior to confirmation of the deal.
The deal won’t be confirmed until tomorrow, but Ndombele is already in France in preparation of joining Lyon on loan. According to Fabrizio Romano, there will be a to-buy clause included in the deal.
However, at this stage the possibility of Lyon paying the entirety of Ndombele’s salary looks highly improbable, if not impossible. Tottenham will have to pay a portion of his salary, the details of which have not been released.
That sounds reasonable, as having a club pay all of his salary while on loan always felt like one of those too-good-to-be-true scenarios that could only eventuate if a deal with a fat-cat side like PSG was still on the table.
Regardless, Tottenham, when confirmed, will be thrilled about seeing the exiled Frenchman leave the capital. He’s been a dead man walking since petulantly sauntering off the pitch during Tottenham’s FA Cup match against Morecambe less than month ago.
In the days following that incident, Tanguy was seen training alone, completely isolated from the rest of the crew. While I’m sure Tanguy will excel in Lyon, it’s a move Tottenham had to make.
They needed to release themselves of such a weighty burden. The relationship quickly unravelled and became untenable, pushing the wheels in motion for a deal Tottenham supporters have been waiting for with heightened anxiousness and anticipation.
No club can afford to keep hold of a player universally ostracized by both supporters and the club. It was a forgone conclusion. After tomorrow’s unofficial confirmation, Tottenham supporters can rest slightly easier knowing a possible source of discord is no longer in play.
Even though this move isn’t permanent, Tanguy will never play another match with the Lilywhites. It will not only go down as Mauricio Pochettino’s worst signing, but Tottenham’s too. Oh well, onward and upward. So long as the deal is confirmed, the healing can start.
And then it will finally be time to let bygones be bygones
