Linked defender a real Dier alternative for Tottenham Hotspur
By Aaron Coe
Tottenham has again been linked with Brazilian defender Gleison Bremer and now that Conte has seen life without Eric Dier, the signing makes sense for Spurs.
Eric Dier has not been injured long or often this season for Tottenham. However, every time the centre-back misses game time the team suffers. Dier is not great but his leadership and ability to keep everyone organized in the back is important and gets missed. To say he is the cog for Tottenham’s defence is likely an understatement at this point.
With Dier’s importance and value clear, finding another centre-back who can provide the same kind of leadership and steadiness is imperative for Antonio Conte. It is this need to find cover for Dier that makes the links with Torino’s Gleison Bremer very intriguing.
Bremer was previously linked with Tottenham
Bremer is a budding defender in Serie-A, who at 24-years of age is ready to take the next step in his playing career. Bremer was linked with Tottenham a few months back, however, that talk was quickly silenced by Torino who insisted Bremer would be extending his stay in Italy.
Instead according to reports out of Italy, Bremer is turning down any contract extension and currently has only 18-months left on his deal. Further, it is reported that Tornio is now open to dealing Bremer with both Milan clubs – AC and Inter – interested, as well as Tottenham Hotspur.
Not known for his passing ability, Bremer is a no-nonsense defender who excels in ball recoveries. Good at tackles, interceptions, and blocks, Bremer is the kind of defensive leader Spurs lack when Dier is off the pitch. Comfortably playing in the middle of a back three or either centre-back position in a back four, Bremer is versatile and can work with both feet.
Strong in the air and an offensive threat, as a result, Bremer would provide the kind of depth Spurs currently do not have while simultaneously upgrading the options behind Dier. Aggressive, skilled, and with good size, Bremer is an excellent defender who Spurs should seriously be considering if depth behind Dier is the goal.
Fresh off his pocketing of super striker Dusan Vlahovic in Torino’s 4-0 win, Bremer is on form and can help now. While we still think finding a backup or alternative to Ben Davies should be a priority if the opportunity to sign Bremer for €25/30M is truly there right now, then Spurs should swoop.
