Lowdown on Tottenham Hotspur loan activity from the transfer window
By Aaron Coe
Tottenham Hotspur had a decent window working toward today and tomorrow with their deals, some of those deals were actually loans, here is the low down on the Spurs loan activity.
When Mauricio Pochettino was at Tottenham Hotspur the Argentine manager preferred his younger players stay at N17 for development. With Jose Mourinho, last season the Spurs were extremely active with loans again. Now with both a new head coach – Nuno Espirito Santo – and a new football director – Fabio Paratici – Tottenham have a mixed approach, keeping some players home and using loans to develop others. Here is the lowdown on the Spurs loan situation.
Tottenham outgoing loans
Tottenham Hotspur has seven players currently out on loan with the potential that maybe some others may join the group. Those seven represent three ‘senior’ players, as well as four young men, from the U23 team.
Spurs hoping youth terrorize League One and Two
Some of the players in the Tottenham Hotspur academy are going to get some playing time with the senior squad this season. It is quite likely that we at least Nile John and Dane Scarlett multiple times over the course of the UEFA Europa Conference League. However, some players need more real game-time in a first-team to develop and thus they go out on loan.
Tottenham has sent a pair to both League One and League Two J’Neil Bennet and Troy Parrott are out on loan in League One, while Jamie Bowden and Kion Etete went on loan to League two.
Etete and Parrott would be fighting for time at striker with the youth team and cleaning up scraps from Kane and Son if they were still at Spurs. Scarlett seems to be ahead of both attackers right now and Dilan Markanday is doing alright with the U-23 team.
Etete has already played over 370 minutes and has scored twice for League Two Northampton Town. Parrott already has north of 400 minutes, all in League One, for MK Dons scoring twice and assisting once. The young strikers going out, scoring goals, and gaining confidence are exactly what they need for their development.
J’Neil Bennett has accumulated more than 2000 minutes in the Premier League 2 over the last several seasons so a loan for the 19-year old winger makes a lot of sense. At Crewe Alexandra in League One, the hope is Bennett would get some minutes to develop or garner a permanent move away.
Finally, Jamie Bowden is a 20-year old midfielder who is out at Oldham Athletic in League Two. Bowden seemingly hit the ground running, playing 180 minutes in his first week with the club. However, he has been left out of the squad five times sense and made the bench once.
