Why Tottenham fans should be excited with the Spurs transfer window

The summer of 2021 will likely go down as the transfer window where Tottenham finally got their overdue rebuild underway, and results thus far should excite Spurs fans. 

The transfer window is always a gamble and sometimes teams do not know exactly how well they did or did not do for some time. We know Tottenham did not have a perfect window and we also know it could have been much worse. At this point, there are still holes aplenty in the squad, however, the window was successful on many fronts. Here are three reasons Tottenham fans should be excited about what happened during this transfer window.

Tottenham went with the youth movement

After spurning the formula for the last season or two, Tottenham Hotspur went back to what had been successful for them early in the Mauricio Pochettino era and really looked to get younger talent.

The average age of the five players Tottenham signed during the window is just under 22-years-old. The average age of the six players who left the club this summer was over 29-years old. As older players like Toby Alderweireld, Moussa Sissoko, and Joe Hart have left the club, this frees up both some wages as well as playing time.

In just one window Tottenham moved four of their five players over 30, leaving just Hugo Lloris behind, and did not add a player older than 26, which most 22 or below. We knew coming in Nuno Espirito Santo was good at developing young players, now he has a lot to work with.

The Spurs brought in some real talent

No Tottenham did not get a real replacement or backup for Harry Kane as deals for Lautaro Martínez and Dusan Vlahovic never materialized with Inter Milan and Fiorentina.  However, there is no doubting that the players they brought in are extremely talented and are the kind of players that should have fans excited.

It was only one match and in the Conference League, but the time Bryan Gil put in against Paços should have been enough to get everyone excited. It is obvious that Bryan has an eye for a pass, a wonderful knack for attacking the dribble, and an excellent motor that will make the day very long for a lot of defenders.

While primarily a wing prior to arriving at Tottenham, it is very possible that Bryan is the creative force the team has been missing in Christian Eriksen.

Besides a potential world-class attacker, Tottenham got not arguably, but by award the best defender in Serie A in Cristian Romero. Romero is young, big, and aggressive toward the ball. Having an additional center-back to be more active the way Davinson Sanchez is will be very helpful for the team.

In Pierluigi Gollini, Tottenham signed the player that is likely to eventually replace Hugo Lloris but on loan so nothing is guaranteed. If Gollini and Romero were the only defensive additions that probably would have been okay but Fabio Paratici and company rolled the dice and struck while the iron was hot with Barcelona and signed young Brazilian right-back Emerson Royal. A rotation of Royal and Tanganga could have Tottenham set for the foreseeable future.

Finally, Tottenham signed and then loaned back to FC Metz Pape Sarr, a teenage midfielder that is often compared to Paul Pogba for his impact on matches. No, not every hole was filled and the balance we are ultimately looking for may not yet be there but there is no doubting the talent of the players signed.

Tottenham again have a plan

Maybe the best thing to come out of this summer was seeing that once again Tottenham has a plan for building this team. Having had three different coaches now with Nuno on board in the last four seasons, it was clearly difficult to have a cohesive strategy.

With Fabio Paratici and Nuno Santo together there is a clear sense of the roles and purpose. Santo is there to get the best out of the players and Paratici is there to get the best players he can for Santo’s system. Together, they could create something great.

I say could because things take time. This summer showed the start of a plan that will help make Tottenham younger and more competitive at the same time. Sometimes a desire to prove oneself is the only motivation a person needs and we may see that as the case with many of the newer young Spurs.

History tells us not all of the players signed will turn out for the club and be great, however, it is obvious the club again has a plan and some direction. It is having that direction, along with some new, young talent that should have fans excited once more.
