Triple game week good for fantasy, bad for United and Tottenham
By Aaron Coe
The Premier League was so excited for their fantasy followers when they posted that Manchester United would play three matches from Sunday to Thursday. The announcement touted adding Bruno Fernandes or Harry Maguire who are unlikely to be rotated to score big points. What the announcement did not say is how much United’s fixture congestion hurts Tottenham.
Tottenham is pulling for United
It does not feel right to write it but the truth of the matter is that right now, Tottenham supporters and probably Spurs players are all big-time Manchester United fans. It is not that Harry Kane is keeping an eye on his team for next season – although a transfer is always possible.
Rather Manchester United plays some really key fixtures as far as Tottenham is concerned. The Sunday match at Aston Villa for the Red Devils is not so much of a concern for the Lilywhites. However, Tuesday – Thursday home games against Leicester City and Liverpool sure are of interest to Tottenham.
Spurs need Leicester and Liverpool to lose, unless
It is no secret that Tottenham has to make up ground. Leicester City is one of the teams both Liverpool and Spurs need to drop points. Likewise, the Lilywhites are in a neck-and-neck battle with the Reds to try and take advantage of any kind of slip-up from Leicester or Chelsea along the way.
Although Manchester United is also above the Lliywhites, they are nearly impossible for the Spurs to catch. 68 is the most points the Spurs can achieve, United currently sits on 67 with four to play. Safe to say, barring some calamitous collapse for four games, Spurs supporters are going to be cheering for Manchester United against both Leicester City and Liverpool. The latter of which should have fans in attendance, legally.
Given the Tottenham need for United to beat both Leicester and Liverpool, having them play back-to-back over a three-day period does not help the Spurs cause, unless those are losses two and three in a four-match losing streak for United. In which case, we say go Foxes and Reds. The bottom line, begging for points makes strange bedfellows and a little help somewhere would be appreciated if Tottenham is to make the top four.
