May 5 was a busy day for the Premier League as they made a major decision and announcement regarding fans.  For the last two match weeks of the 2020-21 Premier League season, Tottenham and every other team in the league will play in front of fans, assuming the United Kingdom government eases lockdown restrictions

Tottenham Others to Host One Each

By including both of the last two matches, the plan will allow each team in the League to host one home match with fans, before the end of the season. According to the League statement, only home fans will be allowed for each team to make logistics easier.

The government is scheduled to announce if the UK will officially enter Step 3 conditions, allowing for fans to return to venues in some capacity starting May 17. The Premier League has scheduled matches to be played May 18 and 19 right after the change goes into effect.

This step is a big deal as a little ramp up and testing is necessary if the Premier League is going to meet their stated goal of full stadiums, including away fans at the start of the season in a few months’ time.

Fans could have big implications for Tottenham

Over the last two games of the season, Tottenham Hotspur first hosts Aston Villa and then closes the season at Leicester City, with potentially a lot on the line. Given the more forward, attacking style being seen under Ryan Mason, the fans could be very helpful for Spurs in overcoming Aston Villa.

Depending on what happened against Wolves just three days prior – and frankly this weekend against Leeds – the fans may be a big boost for the team or could come looking for blood. We already know that there is a large contingent of the fan base unhappy with the ownership and administration of the club, which could be manifest in some way. Ideally, Tottenham is still fighting for the top four.

Regardless, people will be excited to get to see their team live – something to play for or not – and having a little fan atmosphere will be great for the Villa match. Of course, Leicester City could be in a very similar situation to Tottenham, depending on how the next few weeks go.

Leicester City is still comfortably in the top four, sitting in third, two points in front of Chelsea in fourth and a full five points in front of West Ham in fifth. The Foxes host Newcastle this Friday, then play at Manchester United and at Chelsea before hosting Tottenham on the last day.

Depending on how things go for Leicester before the Tottenham finale, the match could be a celebration or could be persecution for the Foxes. We know Leicester lost the Champions League late last season and that still must be somewhere in the team’s psyche or at least we Tottenham fans hope so.

If Tottenham comes into that last match and a win puts them in the top four and Leicester out, the crowd could be quite a factor. Regardless of the situation in the standings having fans back is a good thing as we work toward new normalcy that hopefully includes enjoying some live football. But then again, what is normal in a season where finishing in the fop four may not be enough either.
