We all knew Tottenham Hotspur was going to need some help to make up the three points needed to crawl back into the top four of the Premier League. However, a second yellow card in the first half for Chelsea’s Thiago Silva left the Blues short-handed and the Baggies made them pay. With West Brom Albion’s surprise win over Chelsea, the Spurs can now move back into Premier League the top four.

Tottenham have to win

Few likely expected to have this opportunity on Sunday but it is one Tottenham must take advantage of it. With three points against Newcastle on Sunday, the Spurs can move into a tie with Chelsea on 51 points. However, given the Blues lost by three goals to the Baggies, suddenly an even goal differential sees Tottenham at +3 on Chelsea.

This means if the Spurs win on Sunday they will be ahead of Chelsea on goal difference by at least four goals. With such a tight race in the top four, those goals may be the difference in making the Champions League or not.

Not Tottenham’s first chance to get back in the top four

Of course, this opportunity means absolutely nothing if Tottenham does not beat Newcastle at St. James Park on Sunday. Following the last Saturday where everyone Spurs needed to lose lost, Tottenham blew it the next day.

Just two weeks ago ahead of what should have been the most important game of the season for Tottenham, the Lilywhites came out and laid an egg against Arsenal. Of course, that loss was followed up by an even more embarrassing defeat at the hands of Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League.

A win against Aston Villa before the break started the damage control from the week that was. Now the Lilywhites have a chance – much sooner than many expected – to get back into the top spots and take control of their own future.

Sure, West Ham United can leapfrog the Spurs back into fourth with their own win on Monday against Wolves but for a day at least Spurs can be back in money. Good teams take their chances and this is another chance to show us Tottenham can be a good team. Given everything that has happened this season, a win and nothing less is what Spurs need as this opportunity may not come again.
