Tottenham at Aston Villa, Premier League preview, prediction
By Aaron Coe
A week ago Tottenham was looking to close the gap on the top four and jump back into the race for the Champions League places. Now a week later, Spurs fans are just hoping to not be embarrassed further and for the season to get back on track. What Tottenham Hotspur team will show up today, the one that can score or the one that can bore? That is one of the main issues facing Spurs heading to Villa Park in a match-up for two struggling teams.
Match-up of Struggling Teams
When Tottenham Hotspur takes on Aston Villa on Sunday evening at Villa Park, they are playing against a top-half team who is only 1 place below Spurs in the table. However, like Tottenham, Aston Villa started the season tremendously well only to have the bottom fall out. Now two of the early darlings of the season are battling to stay relevant with two months left to play in the season.
Villa Fell Hard
Aston Villa started the season very brightly, winning five straight in all competitions and their first four matches of the Premier League season. After a difficult October and November where the Villians lost four out of five, they managed to go unbeaten in December and hang around. However, much like Tottenham Villa has found the sledding much tougher in 2021.
Since a 3-0 victory over Palace on Boxing Day, Aston Villa has not scored more than 2 goals in a match. Considering the Villians scored 13 in their first three matches, clearly, the goals have dried up. Much like Tottenham, the chances that were falling have stopped and things have grown quite difficult for Aston Villa – although their excuse is clear – the Villians are 2-2-1 since February 13 when Jack Grealish got injured.
Tottenham Has Struggled too
Like Aston Villa, Tottenham started the season and has faded. Unlike Villa, the Spurs lost their opening match of the season but then went on an 11 match unbeaten run to climb to the top of the Premier League table. Then after that run, the Spurs lost seven of their next 12 matches before winning three straight.
Of course, those three straight wins led to Arsenal and the turd that was the north London Derby. Now like Villa, Spurs are hoping to get things straight and get back to winning ways. Of course, Kane has not been out this whole time as an excuse, like Grealish. Unlike Villa who knows what their problem is Tottenham is still trying to figure that out. So what can and should we expect today when the two struggling sides face off?
