Why Tottenham Hotspur Should Sit Harry Kane Versus Marine
By Aaron Coe
While you can argue for Tottenham Hotspur to play Harry Kane against Marine, and we at HotspurHQ did, the reality is, the best decision for the club is to leave Kane home.
If you look hard enough you can find some reasons for Harry Kane to lace up the boots and play against non-league Marine FC on Sunday in the FA Cup for Tottenham Hotspur. However, if you just step back and think logically about the match-up, it is not hard to conclude Harry Kane should be left home. Here are the reasons Harry Kane should not play at Marine FC on Sunday.
Cons for Harry Kane Playing
When it comes to the reasons Harry Kane should play, those reasons may benefit both clubs and potentially Kane himself. However, if Kane stays in London it will benefit Kane, and should benefits Tottenham, even is Marine may feel a bit hard done.
Stars a Plenty without Kane
While the idea of playing against Harry Kane makes facing Tottenham extra special for Marine FC, Harry Kane is not the only superstar on Tottenham. It seems possible that Gareth Bale will be back in action on Sunday, licking his lips for an opportunity to feast on some less talented opposition. Bale is a Champions League winner clearly a global star.
Additionally, Tottenham are likely to have at least a half dozen regular starters, so whether it is Lloris, Son, and Reguilón, or Højbjerg, Dier, and Bergwijn there will be enough regular Sunday starters to make a meaningful experience for Marine. Add in the potential returns of Erik Lamela and Deli Alli to action and it should be plenty of big names to make it a special day for Marine.
These are just the player stars too, because let’s face it, the idea of playing a match against José Mourinho is definitely pretty cool. Mourinho is probably still the biggest icon and star on the team. The idea that these players can talk about when they played against a man who may be the best manager ever is a big deal. The point is, there is plenty of FA Cup Magic to go around even without Kane.
Vinicius Deserves a Run Out
While I get that Harry Kane wants to play all the time and it is hard to argue against it given his production, Carlos Vinicius both deserves and needs to play. Despite extremely limited opportunities since Europa League qualifying ended and producing when he has had chances, Vinicius has not said one negative word about his situation.
Additionally, there is no point in paying for a player on loan to back-up Harry Kane if you are not going to play him. If we cannot trust Vinicius to lead the line against a non-league team you have to wonder, why he is here. All signs points to Vinicius getting a chance and he should.
Tottenham Do Not Need Kane to Win
While it was not always convincing and at times Spurs did need Harry Kane in Europa League qualifying, in truth Tottenham do not need Harry Kane to win this match. While Kane certainly provides a bigger edge for Tottenham, they have enough fire power without him. Just as they will have numerous ‘names’ for Marine to face, those names are quite capable of playing good football and winning a match. Carlos Vinicius has produced in other opportunities as have Lucas Moura and other Spurs. No reason to think they will not now.
Harry Kane Could Use a Rest
Harry Kane is currently second on Tottenham in minutes with over 1900 on the season. Having featured 25 times out of 27 opportunities, Kane is averaging about 78 minutes per match. We also know that despite all the matches played in the last three plus months, there are a lot more coming, with close to 40 potentially facing Spurs between now and the end of the May.
Knowing that the schedule has few breaks moving forward, this is a perfect time for Harry Kane to catch a day off and spend it with his family, including a son only a few weeks old at home. What do you think, should Kane have the day off?
