Mourinho Pragmatic About Tottenham Chances in Carabao Cup
By Aaron Coe
Asked if Tottenham Hotspur have the best chance to win some silverware in the Carabao Cup, coach José Mourinho was pragmatic saying it has the fewest matches.
It is well documented how long it has been since Tottenham Hotspur have won a major trophy. Equally well known is how good current Spurs coach José Mourinho is at winning trophies. As the season rolls on for Tottenham, one of those two things is going to have to give, so logically, we all want it to be the trophy drought. Following the 1-3 quarterfinal victory at Stoke City, Mourinho was quite realistic about the Carabao Cup being the best current chance, as to “win this trophy we need to win two matches”.
Carabao Has Fewest Games Left
Mourinho knows Tottenham are getting closer and that is the case on all fronts right now. However, as Mourinho points out “the FA Cup didn’t even start for us” yet, so it is difficult to judge how likely a trophy is there.
Regarding Europa League José said, Spurs are in the “last 32 we are really, really far from getting there”. Mourinho continued “and in the Premier League you know what we are” referencing his pony comment regarding Spurs from a few weeks back. The point is, if you are asking which is the most likely right now, well sure of course it is the Carabao Cup as Tottenham are already in the semifinals.
José said they would be “two very difficult matches” for Spurs. If Tottenham can “win the first one, we still have to win the second and the teams that are going to be there are very difficult teams”. We now know Spurs have drawn Brentford for the semifinals avoiding the two Manchester teams who will have a derby instead. However, the semifinals will be no cakewalk.
Well before the draw was known following the Stoke match, Mourinho was complimentary about Brentford as a side. José said, “Brentford for me the way they play they are not Championship they are Premier League”. Given the four Premier League scalps the Bees have claimed to reach the semifinals and the heartbreak of losing in the playoff final a year ago, Brentford sure is not far off.
As for Spurs chances, clearly the Carabao Cup is the best opportunity now, but there is no reason for Tottenham to get ahead of themselves. The one game at a time approach has gotten them this far, no reason to deviate. As for the other competitions and Spurs chances, we can deal with that when the time comes, for now it is just one thing at a time for Tottenham, the way José likes it.
