Winnable Run Starts with Stoke

Tottenham Hotspur need to get their mojo back. After scoring early and defending well in the early stretch, the lack of goals since has left little margin for error. Stoke City is a solid Championship side that has as good of a chance of making the playoffs for promotion as Tottenham do making the top four based on analytics.

We know Stoke from their recent days in the Premier League and Spurs should expect a tough match-up from a side that is going to defend every inch of their half of the pitch. Tottenham need to get back to having the ability to unlock a focused defense and it start with Stoke.

Get the Momentum Back

If Tottenham can get it together against Stoke, they hit a little stretch to close out the year and start the new year with a winnable set of games. We have seen that anything can and will happen with Wolves, Fulham, and Leeds this season; but on paper Spurs should beat all three teams. This is no guarantee, but the reality is, if Tottenham are on, they will win those matches. Spurs just need their confidence and a bit of momentum.

If Tottenham can beat Stoke and then win three straight games in league to end 2020 and begin 2021, suddenly things look quite different. Spurs would have earned 17 of 27 possible points – 63% compared to the current 44% – during this busy stretch. As importantly Spurs would be advancing on three fronts with an opportunity to compete in them all.

Things can change a lot during this busy stretch of the season. Most teams given enough time will regress back to their mean. The question is where the mean for Tottenham is? Is Spurs mean something closer to earning 63% of the points, which would give the team ~72 on the season or 44% and a 50 point midtable finish. The truth is probably somewhere in-between and after the next 10 days we will be a lot closer to what that truth is.
