Tottenham Hotspur Players Continue International Duties
By Aaron Coe
Tottenham Hotspur had another eventful evening on the international stage as Serge Aurier and Sergio Reguilón highlighted some six Tottenham Hotspur players in action.
After more than a dozen Tottenham Hotspur players featured internationally over the weekend, a further eight Spurs were available on the international stage on Tuesday, with four players putting in a full 90 minutes, two more making appearances, and two players not playing. Serge Aurier picked up his 64th cap while again skippering his Ivory Coast and Sergio Reguilón picked up his third cap playing for Spain as both players completed their respective international duty and will soon be returning to N17.
Reguilón and Aurier both played a full 90 minutes, but both suffered 1-0 losses. Reguilón who featured at left back was not at fault as Spain fell 1-0 to Ukraine in the Nations League. Spain still sit atop their group with 7 points, following Germany’s 3-3 draw with Switzerland. Aurier played the right side of a midfield four for Ivory Coast, who fell 1-0 to Japan following a late set-piece winner in an international friendly.
The only other senior level player Tuesday was Juan Foyth – currently on loan at Sevilla – Foyth stayed on the bench in a 2-1 Argentina victory in World Cup qualifying. The rest of the action for Spurs was at the U21 level as the U21 European Championship qualifying continues.
Tottenham youth player Jack Roles started as the central center-half for Cyprus and played 74 minutes in a 0-7 loss to the Netherlands. Elsewhere, in U21 qualifying, Gedson Fernandes played the second half at right back in Portugal’s 0-3 win over Gibraltar. Finally, both Oliver Skipp and Ryan Sessegnon played 90 minutes in a 2-1 English victory over Turkey.
Skipp committed several fouls in the match and picked up a yellow, which sounds like par for the course for the defensive midfielder. Sessegnon played a part in both England goals, taking the shot that led to the own goal opener and then assisting the 88th minute winner by Nketiah. Both Sessegnon and Skipp played on the left, with Ryan as the left winger and Oliver as the left midfielder. The opportunities and minutes are big for both Skipp and Sessegnon who are on loan at Norwich and Hoffenheim further honing their crafts. Young Spurs keeper was an unused substitute in the game rounding out the Tottenham players.
From here all eight players will be returning to their clubs Spurs or otherwise from the international break, while as many as nine more Tottenham Hotspur first team players may be in action on Wednesday as World Cup qualifying and the Nations League continue. Headlining the list is of course Harry Kane who is one of four Spurs possibly participating in the England versus Denmark match; as Eric Dier, Harry Winks, and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg may all play a part.
Hugo Lloris is likely to again captain France in the Nations League, while Toby Alderweireld, Ben Davies, and Matt Doherty are likely to feature in the competition for Belgium, Wales, and Ireland. Finally, Davinson Sanchez is likely to again go 90 for Columbia in a World Cup qualifier in Chile. The hope would be all eight make it through without any issues and be available when Tottenham Hotspur return to action Sunday against West Ham in the Premier League to kick off a winnable stretch of games for Spurs.
