Tottenham Hotspur: Matt Doherty deal is a bargain for Spurs
Tottenham Hotspur’s deal for Matt Doherty is a bargain.
It’s hard not to be impressed with Tottenham Hotspur’s work in the transfer window.
After getting a bargain in the deal for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Southampton and then bringing in Joe Hart on a free transfer, Spurs deserved applause. Now they’re set to make another great move, signing fullback Matt Doherty from Wolves.
According to Sky Sports, Tottenham have agreed a fee of around £15 million with Wolves for Doherty.
Alasdair Gold of football.london has reported that Doherty will have a medical with Spurs on Saturday. Now, Tottenham fans know all too well that a medical doesn’t guarantee the transfer is done (thanks, Willian), but this one appears to be close.
And this is another smart piece of business by Jose Mourinho and Daniel Levy. With help needed at right back, Spurs are bringing in a talented player with Premier League experience at an affordable price.
What should excite Spurs fans the most is Doherty’s attacking ability. In all competitions last season, Doherty scored seven times and made five assists. According to Josh Wright of WhoScored.com, Doherty had an impressive 93 touches in the opposition box last season, second among all defenders in the Premier League.
Spurs will be getting a fullback who can get forward, create chances, and who also gets in the box and scores goals. He can be a first-team regular and help Tottenham compete on all fronts this season.
What this means for Serge Aurier remains to be seen. Aurier has been linked with a move in this transfer window. If the Doherty deal is confirmed, it could be a sign Spurs are ready to move on from Aurier, although fullback depth would then become a concern.
What do you think of the potential Doherty signing? Would this be a good deal for Spurs?
