Tottenham Hotspur’s potential deal for midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg looks to be a bargain.

Tottenham were never going to be big spenders in this transfer market. They will need to spend their money smartly in order to build the squad. So far, they look to have done that with the potential signing of Southampton midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

According to Sky Sports News, Spurs have “agreed deals in principle” with Southampton for not just Hojbjerg, but also Spurs fullback Kyle Walker-Peters going the other way. The deal for Hojbjerg would be £15 million, with Walker-Peters being sold to Saints for £12 million.

So, effectively, Spurs are swapping a backup fullback and £3 million for a player who could start regularly in Jose Mourinho’s team.

In the Sky Sports News article, it highlights some of Hojbjerg’s strengths, including that he ranked first in the Premier League for possessions won last season.

What do Spurs desperately need? A defensive midfielder who can break up play and win the ball back. Hojbjerg can play that exact role and secure a starting spot in Mourinho’s team.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy receives a lot of criticism from fans but he deserves credit for this piece of business. Considering there were reports recently of Everton having a bid accepted from Southampton for £25 million, to get a deal where Spurs only end up paying £3 million is incredible.

Walker-Peters played well on loan for Southampton, so the move makes sense for Saints.

If this transfer does indeed become official, what does it mean for Tottenham’s other central midfielders such as Harry Winks? And, what does this mean for Tanguy Ndombele? Ndombele was Tottenham’s big summer signing a year ago but could barely get on the pitch late in the season. Mourinho rarely used him, leading fans to wonder whether he’ll be sold this summer.

That’s another topic to get into, but the fact is, Hojbjerg can be an excellent addition to Tottenham’s squad. If this deal comes off, it’ll be a bargain.
