Tottenham reportedly after yet another teenager in transfer market
By Gary Pearson
A rumour that has been lurking in the shadows is garnering more attention of late, with Tottenham apparently interested in signing West Brom teenager Rekeem Harper.
The Metro and the The Birmingham Mail, among other UK publications, are devoting increased time to the potential transfer. This one, however, is still in its infancy. Liverpool, Juventus, Celtic and other prominent clubs are after Harper’s signature. Additionally, newly appointed West Brom manager Slaven Bilic is doing his utmost to try and persuade the midfielder to stay at the club.
Ordinarily I would implore Tottenham, who is on the verge of finalizing the Jack Clarke signing and is keenly interested in Ryan Sessegnon, to, for a while anyway, veer away from their fascination with unproven teenagers. However Harper is out of contract this month and will most likely be signed on a free transfer, music to Daniel Levy’s frugal ears.
Whichever club lands Harper will rejoice knowing they’ve saved between £10 and £20 million on transfer fees for the 19-year-old midfield prospect. Harper can play in a deeper, holding role in the centre of the park but is more comfortable in a slightly advanced role.
He made his West Brom début in the Premier League in August 2017, before going out on loan to Blackburn Rovers in League One. Making 16 Championship appearances last season, Harper appeared in 22 matches in all competitions. He scored one goal and added an assist during the 2018-19 campaign.
Juventus feel they’re favourites to win the Harper sweepstakes, but each club is in with a similar chance at signing the Englishman.
Even Bilic is in with a shot at convincing Harper to stay at the Baggies, albeit a fairly diminished one.
If you were 19 years old with an opportunity to sign with Liverpool, Juventus or Tottenham, would you be content staying with a mediocre Midlands’ side? You’d think not unless the player has some sort of allegiance to the club.
Well, it just so happens that Harper is a local lad who was born in Birmingham on March 8, 2000. Do you rate Harper and would you like to see him as part of Mauricio Pochettino’s future plans?
