When Davinson Sanchez signed for Spurs last summer for £40million from Dutch giants Ajax, the 21-year-old central defender brought with him an impressive resume for a player of his age, however, questions were cast about whether or not he’d be able to handle the intensity of the Premier League.

A year later Sanchez has answered the naysayers, and after a terrific debut season for Spurs, he has been rewarded with a new and improved contract that will keep the Columbian international in North London until 2024.

Sanchez managed to overcome a wobbly start to the season and showed levels of maturity far beyond his years in doing so. Despite this start, Sanchez has visibly improved leaps, and bounds with every game played, proving to be worth every penny for the £40million dished out for him.

Next season Sanchez will have to take it up another level, something the youngster is more than capable of doing.

He will have the chance to play in his first ever World Cup this summer for his native Columbia, an experience that will only benefit Pochettino’s side next season and for years to come, but more importantly, this is a testament to how good he is.

The 21-year-old possesses all the key attributes to be one of the Premier League’s best defenders for years to come; his physical presence and South American flair are a combination every manager around Europe dreams of having in the heart of their defences.

With all the talk of Toby Alderweireld leaving this season, Sanchez has quietly gone about his business and maybe Spurs already have their long-term replacement for the Belgian in the young Columbian.

The second most expensive South American defender in the history of the game, Sanchez proved in his debut Premier League season, that this is all for good reason.

The future for Spurs and Sanchez is bright, and if he continues to elevate his performances, he will be a prized asset for Pochettino’s side in seasons to come.
