Breaking news has confirmed Spurs’ worst nightmare, that Harry Kane will be out of the lineup until April after re-injuring his right ankle on Sunday against Bournemouth.

His ankle was too inflamed yesterday for the medical staff to scan it and properly ascertain the severity of the injury. However, the best-case scenario will see Kane out for at four to six weeks.

The injury is to the same ankle that kept him out of the lineup for almost three weeks last season.

Ankle injuries of this nature – when rolled violently in repetition – are more easily stretched, able to better push the pull-tear threshold further. Kane’s right ankle has rolled over so many times that it would take an extremely violent incident to force a tear.

Maybe Kane’s ankle, since first rolling it, has taken on similar elasticity to Fantastic Four’s Mister Fantastic. Hopefully, as seen below, it can bend and stretch wildly without tearing.

Even if Kane has the regenerative capabilities of the Green Goblin, both Tottenham Football Club and The Three Lions will not risk the long-term wellbeing of their chief asset. For an asset worth an estimated £200 million on the open market, a risk-averse strategy is the only option.

Tottenham have a five-point buffer over Chelsea and can afford one misstep in the run in. Mauricio Pochettino has full trust in his squad and won’t be as anxious as he once was about playing without Kane.

However, seven weeks is a long time to cope without your top player, and this span will test Spurs resolve to play indefinitely without their leading scorer.

While nobody on the planet can replace Kane, Pochettino has built a squad that can temporarily cope without their headlining act, as reinforced by four wins on the bounce – dating back to last season – without Kane’s services.

With one of the top flight’s best supporting casts, Spurs are by no means a one-man show. Son Heung-Min, Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli have combined for 37 goals in all competitions in the current campaign, two more than their injured comrade.

Not bad for a team who many think are doomed without their prized asset’s guaranteed contribution. Taking the awful breaking news into account, Tottenham will need that triumvirate to step up massively.
