Stats never tell the whole story but they do offer historical context, so let’s dive deep into the analytics in the lead up to Wednesday’s decisive second leg. 

The gulf in Champions League (CL) experience between Tottenham and Juventus couldn’t be more stark.

Chockfull of European pedigree, Juventus are one of the competition’s wily veterans while Tottenham, mostly untested and untried at this stage of the CL, are the exciting young startups, a club comprised of numerous unproven players poised to make an impression.

Juventus’ stats

  • This represents Juventus’ ninth appearance in the round of 16
  • Reached the final in 2015 and 2017, losing to Barcelona and holders Real Madrid, respectively
  • The Old Lady have advanced in five of eight previous round of 16 ties
  • Juventus are undefeated in their last six CL matches
  • Won five of six away matches in last season’s competitions. The only match they failed to win, a 0-0 draw at Camp Nou, still resulted in Juventus advancing to the semifinal. In those six matches, Juventus conceded one goal
  • Haven’t lost in their last seven matches against Premier League opposition
  • Overall, Juventus have lost 12 of 21 games away to English opposition
  • In 13 aggregate ties with English opposition, Juventus have a losing record, failing to advance on eight occasions
