Tottenham is Allegedly Targeting Left-back Jordan Lukaku
Transfer rumors have linked Tottenham to two players. One being Lazio’s Jordan Lukaku.
Now that the 2016-17 season is into the month of October, it’s to be expected that early transfer rumors are going to be circulating the internet in preparation for the winter transfer window. Which is less than three months away.
For the past two January transfer windows, Mauricio Pochettino, Daniel Levy and Tottenham have been rather quiet, making only a handful of moves. Signing the likes of DeAndre Yedlin, Dele Alli and Shilow Tracey to be exact.
All three players were under the radar-type of signings that ended up costing Spurs a total of £7.8 million. Tracey’s deal was undisclosed, so this only takes Yedlin and Alli’s fees into account.
With that being said, Tottenham will always be linked to a plethora of players that range from good footballers at top European clubs all the way to young starlets trying to make a name for themselves.
How any player fits into Pochettino’s philosophy is simply down to whether or not they can make a difference. Or, more specifically, make an impact as a super sub and occasionally becoming a starter.
Since depth is something that Tottenham are continuously trying to build up these past couple of seasons to mount a consistent title challenge every year.
It’s no surprise that the biggest transfer rumor involving Spurs right now is Real Madrid’s Isco. You could say that it’s the opposite of the Érik Lamela to Inter Milan rumors. Both stories won’t fade away anytime soon.

According to Football Whispers on Sky Sports, their are two targets being linked to Spurs ahead of January. The first player one would be… yes, you guessed it. It’s definitely Isco.
The second player is something out of left field. As Lazio left-back Jordan Lukaku — the brother of Everton’s Romelu Lukaku — is somehow on Tottenham’s radar.
Before getting into why this rumor is puzzling at best, let’s look at what Football Whispers had to say, regarding a “potential” move.
“In addition to Isco, Spurs are also being linked with a move for Lazio left-back Jordan Lukaku – the younger brother of Everton striker Romelu Lukaku,” Football Whispers wrote on Sky Sports.
“The 22-year-old only signed for Lazio in July, moving from Anderlecht in a €5 million transfer, so a sudden switch to Spurs may seem unlikely.”
“If the Belgium international were to join Pochettino’s squad, he would almost certainly serve primarily as back-up to Danny Rose, who has recently signed a new deal at the club.”
“With the index score ranking only a 1.3 out of 5, the chances of Tottenham signing him appear relatively slim. However, should Tottenham continue to mount a title challenge, then Lukaku may be relied upon for some defensive depth.”
It’s not bad to sign more depth for Spurs’ backline. Though it certainly is bad to forget that Ben Davies is actually a member of Mauricio Pochettino’s 25-man squad. And has been for two seasons now.
The Welshman has been improving since joining Tottenham from Swansea City. And although he will be considered second fiddle to Danny Rose on the depth chart, Pochettino rotates his back four — especially at full-back — enough times throughout an entire season that Davies gets a good amount of starts.
At the age of 23, Ben Davies has already amassed 62 appearances for Tottenham in all competitions since the 2014-15 season. His debut campaign with the North London club.

While the addition of Jordan Lukaku (22) would be intriguing — if only for the sole purpose of stock piling yet another Belgian international — Mauricio Pochettino only needs four total full-backs.
Which is probably one reason why DeAndre Yedlin was sold this past summer. Not only was he behind Kieran Trippier, but he would hardly get any minutes. Lukaku, if he joins, will be in the same ship as the American defender.
