With the dust finally settling after Mauricio Pochettino extended his stay with Tottenham Hotspur, Daniel Levy’s comments have made the rounds shortly after.

Even though Daniel Levy and Mauricio Pochettino had been discussing a long-term contract extension for a few months now, since the New Year, the Argentine manager wasn’t in a hurry to get anything done yet because he still had three years running on his original contract.

Then, late last month, Pochettino had verbally agreed to a new deal.

Obviously everyone was ecstatic that the 44-year-old wouldn’t be leaving White Hart Lane anytime soon. Except, a verbal agreement and actually signing a contract extension are two completely different things.

The fact that Mauricio Pochettino and Sir Alex Ferguson had lunch together a couple of days ago almost threw a wrench into Tottenham’s plans to not lose their manager to Manchester United who are looking to move on from Louis van Gaal.

Fast forward to Thursday, May 12 and any speculation of Pochettino leaving is finally over. A new five-year deal has just been signed that will keep the Argentine manager in Tottenham until 2021 and a part of Spurs’ brand new stadium which is set to debut ahead of the 2018-19 season.

For Daniel Levy, it was no doubt a relief for the Tottenham chairman who had to hear rumors of Manchester United and Chelsea keeping tabs on Mauricio Pochettino while also trying to pry him away from Spurs.

It also didn’t help that Pochettino even said that his dream job is to one day manage Paris Saint-Germain. In the end though, everything worked out.

Now, here’s Levy following the contract extension (quotes via the Guardian).

More from Hotspur HQ

“We have seen Mauricio bring a tremendous spirit and ethos to our club and embrace the attacking style of play with which we have always been associated.”

“He has built a squad of youth and experience and this season we have seen football played at the highest level – quite sublime at times.”

“Everyone at the club is delighted he has agreed an extended contract and we all look forward to working with him in the coming seasons.”

“I know he is as ambitious for our club as we all are.”

The biggest off-season signing that Tottenham had to address was to sign Mauricio Pochettino to a contract extension. That had to come first before any new signing would be joining Spurs.

And now that Daniel Levy was able to keep the Argentinian on-board for five more years, it makes it easy for Spurs to focus on finishing off a great season and getting ready for next year.

Spurs’ next priority now that Pochettino has signed, is to improve the depth and bench that wasn’t up to par with Tottenham’s starting eleven this term.

There are needs for more width and attacking players, a striker to work with (alongside or start instead of) Harry Kane. As well as central and defensive midfield depth. Another center-back would be nice to add too.

Overall, Daniel Levy’s quote sums up what Tottenham can look forward to, and that’s a team who will challenge for silverware, play attacking football and do big things.
