Nominees: Dele Alli (Tottenham), Eric Dier (Tottenham), Héctor Bellerin (Arsenal), Ademola Lookman (Charlton Athletic), Moussa Dembélé (Fulham)

2015 winner: Harry Kane (Tottenham)

Why Dele Alli/Eric Dier Could Win:

Both Dele Alli and Eric Dier have seemingly come from out of nowhere to help lead Spurs to an unprecedented second place in the Premier League, this late in the season. Alli who played for MK Dons in League One last season made the transition to the Premier League with Spurs rather easily for a 19-year-old. He has taken the Premiership by storm with dazzling displays at center mid and attacking mid, scoring seven goals and tallying six assists.

Dier, a 22-year-old center-back for Tottenham last term, went back to his old position of defensive midfielder that he learned in Sporting Lisbon’s academy in Portugal. Since this past summer, Eric Dier took a crash course during pre-season and has since anchored the holding mid role with ease.

Both players have successfully made the transition this season and are shoe-ins to claim the London Young Player of the Year (under 23) award giving Tottenham a 40 percent chance of winning (two out of five). Although the odds-on-favorite to win is Dele Alli because his offensive displays tend to overshadow his teammate’s defensive prowress.

Why Dele Alli/Eric Dier Can’t Win:

Héctor Bellerin, Ademola Lookman and Moussa Dembélé have all performed well this season but going up against Dele Alli and Eric Dier isn’t fair. Seeing as how the two Tottenham players have heavily contributed to Spurs’ success more so than what the other nominees have done for their respective teams.

Just like Mauricio Pochettino being the favorite to win London Manager of the Year, either Alli or Dier should win the London Young Player of the Year award. Voters would be hard-pressed to not consider Spurs’ Dele Alli or Eric Dier easy winners based on their current seasons individually.
