Tottenham Hotspur have already made a handful of notable signings this summer transfer window without even touching the attack, but the biggest of them was the 100 million pound swoop for Newcastle United center midfielder Sandro Tonali, who should create one of the best double pivots in the Premier League next to another blockbuster Spurs summer signing in 85 million pound youngster Mateus Fernandes.

Spurs have been determined to shed the label that they are not a serious club, as Roberto De Zerbi has the Lilywhites spending with Manchester City, Manchester United, and Arsenal this summer as he snatched away two midfield transfer targets these other Big Six clubs badly wanted.

A major signing from last summer, Xavi Simons, is clearly impressed with the business Tottenham and De Zerbi are doing this year, and he was especially struck by the addition of Tonali behind him in midfield as Spurs upgrade one of their weaknesses into a huge point of strength for 2026/27.

Xavi Simons is pumped for Sandro Tonali

Simons told Matt Barlow of the Daily Mail, “I've played against Tonali for example. I know he is a top player. Aggressive with the ball. He will find the passes to those like me in the No 10 position. He will help the team just to play football and bring success. Everyone can see that the club is aiming high. We know what happened last season can't even be considered to happen again. This is a massive club. We all know that so at the start of the season, we will see a new Tottenham.”

Xavi said a lot more than this on the subject and waxed poetic about the positive changes Tottenham have made so far this summer, but what he is saying about Sandro Tonali especially rings true and is something concrete for Spurs fans to keep in mind going into the fresh season.

Last season, Xavi Simons could look dominant at times, but he was also visibly impacted by Tottenham Hotspur not having true control over games and struggling to get the ball to their playmakers, specifically Simons. He would be quiet in some Premier League matches just because of how badly the Tottenham midfield was struggling.

By making the 100 million pound statement Tonali signing, Spurs are giving Simons a world class No. 6 who can sit behind him, create chances for him, and change games. Simons is getting to work with a guy who can win the ball defensively and then deliver him the ball offensively, and he and Tottenham fans 100 percent know how valuable that is to have as a team.
