Will Lankshear might be better than Dominic Solanke, but he still wasn't the answer

Will Lankshear is already putting together an insane season for Middlesborough after a summer sale from Tottenham Hotspur, scoring 13 goals in 13 games. It is only the EFL Championship, but Lankshear is showing such a nose for goal with both his positioning and finishing that it is hard not to feel like he is better than Dominic Solanke already.

Solanke is coming off a dreadful season for Tottenham, and even though he played a key role in Spurs winning the Europa League in his debut campaign in 2024/25, it was not like he was smashing double digit goals or playing great then either.

This season, Big Dom has been even worse, and even in games in which Spurs dominate like Manchester United and Crystal Palace he holds the team back with his inability to get into the box and put the ball into the back of the net when he does get chances.

Tottenham need someone established up top

But while Lankshear may be a better option right now and in the future, keeping him and giving him a shot this season in the squad would not have been the solution. Keeping Lankshear could have been a part of the solution, sure, but regardless of what their decision on him was or if there is any regret on the choice to sell the 21 year old talent to Boro, Spurs needed to sign an established No. 9.

They landed Omar Marmoush, who had scored more than a goal per game in a half season with Eintracht Frankfurt before his move to Manchester City, but outside of that window of time, he was never an elite goal scorer. Marmoush is talented, but he has not been able to make his mark in the Premier League, and just like at City, he has started his career at N17 with questions on his best role and position.

Tottenham Hotspur showed marked interest in Eli Junior Kroupi this past summer, but he was never going to be a realistic option. And though Spurs are showing great pull with Roberto De Zerbi calling the shots and were able to land both Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes with a willingness to finally compete for these elite prospects, a transfer battle with PSG for Kroupi in the middle of the season with AFC Bournemouth reluctant to sell is a different ball game.

Spurs are going to have to regroup on the striker market, and while Will Lankshear would have helped them this season in their first team, they still need to keep their eyes on a big prize at striker in order to complete their squad.
