Why Tottenham should be optimistic about winning a trophy this season
Tottenham Hotspur are now 16 years without a major trophy, a frustrating dry spell that fans are desperate to end.
Currently sitting sixth in the Premier League, the team appears more confident in overcoming the turbulent struggles of their poor season.
Their last taste of silverware came in 2008 when they won the Carabao Cup, and since then, Spurs supporters have endured heartbreak in multiple finals, including the Champions League in 2019 and three more Carabao Cup losses.
However, there’s a new sense of optimism around the club under the guidance of Ange Postecoglou.
Why Tottenham should be optimistic about winning a trophy this season
Known for winning trophies in every one of his previous managerial roles, Postecoglou remains confident that he can turn Tottenham’s fortunes around.
A big part of Tottenham’s resurgence in cup competitions this season has been Brennan Johnson. The Welsh forward scored a dramatic injury-time winner against Coventry City in September, ensuring Spurs avoided a humiliating Carabao Cup exit.
Since then, the team has gained momentum, even managing to knock Manchester City out of the competition.
With a quarter-final clash against Manchester United looming, the Carabao Cup is shaping up as their best shot at a trophy.
But Johnson’s contributions go beyond the domestic cups. In the Europa League, the 23-year-old has shone, netting important goals against Qarabag and Ferencvaros.
According to The Spurs News, his sharp performances have earned praise from teammates like Dejan Kulusevski, who described him as unbelievable.
While Johnson hasn’t played heavy minutes this season, his knack for delivering in key moments could make him a pivotal figure as Spurs aim to reach the Europa League final in Bilbao next May.
Can Spurs finally end their trophy drought?
With the Premier League title realistically out of reach, Tottenham’s hopes rest firmly on cup competitions.
The Carabao Cup and Europa League seem the most attainable, but the FA Cup could also present an opportunity.
“I think definitely a trophy for sure. I’m really confident about that,” Johnson recently told Optus Sport. “I think right now in the Premier League we’re a bit inconsistent but we want to turn that into positive results every week."
Postecoglou’s second season promise and the belief radiating from players like Johnson suggest that this year might be different.
Tottenham fans have heard such optimism before, but with Postecoglou’s track record and players like Johnson stepping up, there’s a genuine feeling that this could finally be the year their long wait ends.
