Though no reliable outlets have drawn the links between Victor Osimhen and Tottenham Hotspur to this point, the pure speculation has been enough to start an interesting conversation among Spurs supporters about the merits of making the former Serie A Capocannoniere and Scudetto winner in 2022/23 with Napoli the next big striker signing at N17.
Osimhen has been playing for Galatasaray since he and Napoli had a falling out over some offensive social media posts and wage offers that were not in line with a world class player, which, of course, is the same reason why Naples hero Khvicha Kvaratskhelia left for PSG - and then won two Champions League titles in the process.
While Osimhen has not been raking in Champions League trophies in the Turkish Super Lig, the Nigerian international has still been phenomenal despite being away from the spotlight, including spearheading an upset over former rival Juventus in last season's Champions League knockouts.
That performance highlighted exactly what Osimhen could bring to the table for Tottenham Hotspur beyond the goals, which he already proved he can get by leading Serie A. His all around play as a No. 9 is among the elite in the world, and he destroyed Juve with work rate, unselfishness, chances created, and dribbling rather than going for glory on his own.
In a lot of ways, Victor Osimhen checks off a ton of boxes that Tottenham want in a striker. He can score 20-30 goals in a season, he is proven at the Champions League level, he can do a lot more than score goals, he works extremely hard, he has the athleticism to win his battles in the Premier League, and he shouldn't be difficult to sign since he plays outside of Europe's top five leagues.
But while his transfer fee will not be as exorbitant as, say, Eli Junior Kroupi's, his wages will be. Osimhen makes more than 20 million euros per season in total at Galatasaray, as Turkish Super Lig clubs can afford to pay the big names big bucks. He would be, by far, the highest paid player at Tottenham, and it is unlikely he would take a pay cut, given he has not really been beating the drum to head back to Europe, possibly content to keep cashing his chips at one of Turkey's historic clubs.
Roberto De Zerbi is an ambitious man, and outside of potentially Cody Gakpo in this position, the Italian coach has not picked out a new striker for Tottenham when he desperately needs someone to compete with Richarlison (or Dominic Solanke) and bring more goals than them. Osimhen would be ideal and is someone De Zerbi watched closely when he was coaching Sassuolo in Italian football.
By signing Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, De Zerbi flipped the narrative that Tottenham do not spend big on players wanted by European powerhouses. But if he wants to flip the narrative that Spurs do not spend big on wages and sign a truly marquee striker, Osimhen is the way to go.
