Tottenham Hotspur have a lot of work to do this summer transfer window in order to dig themselves out of back to back 17th placed finishes in the Premier League and start to return to the top four of the league and Champions League contention, which is the ultimate goal new manager Roberto De Zerbi has placed on the Lilywhites.
After saving Spurs from relegation, De Zerbi has brought in his old Brighton disciple Jan Paul van Hecke to play center back, but he is not remotely done there. In addition to renewing interest in Manchester City star Savinho, Tottenham are going hard after the Premier League midfield duo of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, as De Zerbi wants to sign both standouts together to revamp the middle of the park.
Surprisingly, Tottenham are not far away from Fernandes despite the player receiving flattering interest from Real Madrid and their legendary Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho, who also wants the player badly, and major interest from a midfield need Manchester United.
Tottenham are getting closer to a midfielder
Now, according to a report from top transfer insider Matteo Moretto, Tottenham Hotspur are "very close" to signing a personal contract agreement with the West Ham United breakout star in the defensive midfield. Moretto adds that the player has been "open to signing" with Spurs despite interest from even bigger clubs, but he cautions that Tottenham have yet to engage in official transfer negotiations with the Hammers for the player.
Of course, with a club as massive as the record Champions League holders Real Madrid involved and with the Jorge Mendes agent connection between Mateus Fernandes and manager Jose Mourinho, none of the transfer negotiations over a potential 100 million euro fee for Fernandes even matter unless Spurs are able to get a verbal green light from Fernandes that he wants to play for Roberto De Zerbi and Spurs.
But it seems like he does, and with Tottenham now "very close" to a personal agreement with Fernandes, that is another sign of how serious Johan Lange and Co. are about backing De Zerbi. They already gave the Italian manager Jan Paul van Hecke, and now they appear to be close to submitting serious proposals for Sandro Tonali and Fernandes with personal agreements on the way to lead to more intense negotiations on the club side.
Now, the club side negotiations over the final fee are usually where Tottenham get tripped up, so there is still a lot of work to do on the Fernandes front. But this is huge news Spurs fans should be pleased about nonetheless.
