Tottenham Hotspur were already hard at work on summer transfers even back a couple of months ago when a lot of people thought Spurs were playing themselves into a historic relegation from the Premier League. New manager Roberto De Zerbi, though, had other plans, as Spurs saved themselves on the final day of the Premier League season in dramatic fashion with a 1-0 win over Everton.

Despite the fact that Spurs biggest issues are offensive, the first two signings of their summer transfer window are expected to be on the defensive side of the ball. Spurs reportedly had pre-arranged deals with Bournemouth center back Marcos Senesi and Liverpool left back Andrew Robertson, and these deals were said to be agreed to as free agent contracts pending Spurs sparing themselves from relegation to the EFL Championship.

Senesi is apparently all but official, and now Fabrizio Romano is confirming the "verbal agreement" between Andy Robertson and Tottenham Hotspur. Fab says that Robbo is expected to respect the pact that he and Spurs already made to each other during the season and spurn recent interest from Serie A giants Juventus, who have been trying to hijack this deal for the last week. Romano also states that Roberto De Zerbi wants Robertson just as much as the club does, as they were recruiting the left back before his arrival from Marseille.

Spurs bring in a new defender

Robertson is 32 years old now and is clearly on the decline in the Premier League, but he may not be a bad veteran to have as a backup if the wages aren't crazy. With Destiny Udogie hard to rely on due to injury and potentially even available for sale, Robertson could get minutes for Spurs next season and kind of replace Ben Davies as that utility backup and leader.

Spurs did sign a left back during the winter transfer window, which is when they were actually first interested in the Liverpool icon. They brought in Brazilian teenager Souza, who did briefly get playing time when he first arrived and looked like a real gem of a finding for Johan Lange and Co. So hopefully, Robertson can help nurture the Palmeiras product and work with him at the left back position.

Tottenham fans won't be mad at the Andy Robertson transfer as long as the rest of the signings are bigger and better, as Robbo is more of a squad piece and leadership guy than an actual game changer at this stage of his illustrious career.
