Nearly every single Tottenham Hotspur supporter is dreaming of a Harry Kane reunion in 2026, and while the Ballon d'Or candidate is showing no signs of even wanting to leave Bayern Munich, a sneaky release clause in his contract that is active until January makes a transfer plausible enough that Spurs supporters are getting their hopes up.
Kane is everything Tottenham are missing as a team, because a world-class striker who can score and create at his level could immediately vault this team up to Premier League title contention instead of being a team that is disjointed and lacking star power, specifically the necessary goals, in attack.
The idea of Kane leaving the Bundesliga for the Premier League has not been 100 percent ruled out, but while everyone has been assuming that a return to the Premier League is equivalent to a return to Tottenham, one prominent transfer insider sends a sobering reminder that this isn't necessarily the case.
Appearing on the United Stand, Give Me Sport and talkSPORT transfer reporter Ben Jacobs reminded everyone that Harry Kane was seriously considering a transfer from Tottenham to Manchester United before ultimately moving out of the Premier League entirely and joining Bayern Munich in Germany.
Harry Kane could go for the goal-scoring record
Jacobs said, “Nothing yet to suggest anybody is in open formal talks with Harry Kane, but there is a diminished release clause in 2026, and Kane is still eyeing up that Premier League goalscoring record. It’s not a given if he returns to the Premier League, it’ll be Spurs or no other club because Kane was interested in Manchester United before he ended up moving to Bayern Munich.“
So on the one hand, Jacobs is endorsing the plausibility of Kane leaving Bayern for the Premier League, which is in itself good news for Tottenham fans. That added nugget of him gunning for that Premier League goal-scoring record is an interesting wrinkle worth considering, too.
But on the other hand, Jacobs is floating the possibility of Kane shattering everyone's hearts and joining Manchester United. The thought of that, honestly, is unthinkable upon any sort of logical review. Sure, being the savior of a club as prestigious as Man United and being the hero at striker they need is tempting, but Man United already signed a striker of the future in Benjamin Sesko, as well as two more forwards in Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha last summer; their biggest needs are in midfield.
More importantly, though, why on earth would Kane ever consider betraying Tottenham for Man United? If he's going to leave Bayern Munich for the Premier League after winning trophy after trophy in Bavaria, why would he want to join a team that isn't even competing in the Champions League? Maybe Man United can turn it around before next summer, but that fast of a leap seems implausible.
