There have been too many great players Tottenham Hotspur could have signed in their history, especially in their recent history when they were flush with cash, owning a great fan base, rocking top managers, and winning games. Daniel Levy's strategy of haggling over deals, avoiding big transfer targets, and not wanting to mix it up with the other big clubs in England and abroad have really harmed Spurs, including in his final years as CEO.

But the most egregious of the misses is currently reminding Spurs fans of what they could have had in the summer 2024 transfer window had they been more proactive. Even though he is not a starter for his national team, that is only because France have a more loaded attack than anyone else with three literal Ballon d'Or contenders starting in their front three.

That missed opportunity is none other than winger Desire Doue, who can play on etiher side of the formation and is now a two time Champions League winner. And far from a mere passenger, Doue is a hard working, well rounded, and explosive team player who has been central to the success of PSG.

Tottenham missed out on a top player for sure

While PSG have more clout than Tottenham Hotspur now, that really was not 100 percent the case in 2024. Tottenham were riding high off a good season under new manager Ange Postecoglou, who had charism and an exciting brand of football. PSG were mired in controversy, still uncertain about Luis Enrique, and shedding Kylian Mbappe after another disappointing Champions League campaign.

Had Tottenham not bailed out of the transfer battle entirely and left Desire Doue entirely up for PSG and Bayern Munich to fight for, they really could have ended up with one of the best young wingers - and players overall, really - in world football that summer.

Think about it. Tottenham signed Sandro Tonali ahead of interest from Arsenal, Manchester City, and Real Madrid - all league title contenders - after finishing 17th and nearly getting relegated but for heroics on Matchday 38. And they also signed another coveted player with Real Madrid and Manchester United links in Mateus Fernandes.

The difference is that new Spurs leadership listened to Roberto De Zerbi, gave him a chance to sell the players on his project, and put their money where his mouth is. Daniel Levy did none of that with Doue, and Spurs missed out on an elite winger that they will forever regret not signing with big need still in the attack.
