Tottenham Hotspur have been more active than any other Premier League team this summer transfer window and any team in European football besides Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid. That has never been said before about Spurs, but such is the change in the air after the appointment of Roberto De Zerbi, who has more power than any manager at the club before him following Spurs successful Premier League survival.
Spurs are looking to add to the trio of Jan Paul van Hecke, Andrew Robertson, and Marcos Senesi with a top class center midfielder. Relegated breakout star Mateus Fernandes is one of De Zerbi's favored options, but his No. 1 target is fellow Brescia native Sandro Tonali, a former Scudetto winner at AC Milan and a current starter for Newcastle United.
Newcastle recently rejected a transfer offer from Spurs for the player, as they have been holding out for 85 million pounds and potentially even up to 100 million pounds, depending on add onds included in the deal.
Tottenham need to meet the valuation
According to new reporting from Fabrizio Romano and Matteo Moretto, via the Spurs Express, Tottenham are prepared to submit an upgraded transfer offer for Tonali. After Newcastle's rejection of their latest bid, Spurs are prepared to submit a new offer above 80 million pounds in order to land the Italian international.
At this point, it is probably better for Spurs not to haggle over a few million pounds and to do whatever it takes to sign Sandro Tonali, given how much Roberto De Zerbi wants him and his own quality and upside with a coach like De Zerbi who can suit him better than Eddie Howe.
Tottenham Hotspur have been burned plenty of times in the past by Daniel Levy haggling over a few million pounds, only to end up with absolutely nothing at all. With Manchester City interested, Spurs do not want to run that risk, and another fear factor element should be the knowledge that Arsenal were very interested in Tonali during the season - and they have quietly swooped in and stole Spurs transfer targets in the past.
Tonali is the No. 1 dream target for De Zerbi right now, and he would be severely disappointed and maybe more than a little bit ticked off at the organization if they were to drop the ball on him. It's good that Spurs are willing to submit a more serious offer for Tonali, and it sounds like they are preparing to meet Newcastle's asking price.
