Tottenham Hotspur honestly have a solid collection of midfielders at their disposal, though manager Thomas Frank isn't using many of them optimally, with top young talents Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray mostly toiling away on the bench this season despite being superior options to the players starting ahead of them.

Spurs did land an elite defensive presence on loan from Bayern Munich in Portuguese international Joao Palhinha, but the overall star power in midfield is still lacking. Tottenham need to sign either an elite deep lying playmaker or an elite all action midfielder who can come up and add goals, and if it were up to some fans, they would nail both.

Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace is one dream option for the 2026 transfer windows, but now Tottenham appear to be adding another, potentially stealing away an elite player from one of their disgraced former managers.

A former Tottenham manager's star pupil

According to a report from Caught Offside's Mark Brus, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, and Newcastle United are all interested in signing away Napoli star center midfielder Scott McTominay, one year after he led the Partenopei to the Scudetto as the literal MVP of Serie A.

McTominay used to be a meme at Manchester United, so his breakout under Conte immediately after joining Napoli and becoming the best player in Serie A was literally one of the biggest stories of the season in world football. Conte turned McTominay into a beast, as he was snapping off legs, barreling down the pitch with the ball at his feet, and scoring goals with the ferocity of a striker.

There's no doubt that the 2024/25 version of McTominay would dominate Tottenham's team by comparison, particularly in the department of adding goals. But of course, McTominay already flopped hard in the Premier League, and we've seen plenty of players show that they just don't have the same sauce in England that they did in Italy.

A reunion with Manchester United seems insane after all that McTominay went through there, but pairing him up with Palhinha or Bergvall in North London may not be so crazy if the price is right. Given how high Napoli usually sell and how important he is to a club that is desperately trying not to lose Conte to another tantrum over being competitive, that's unlikely. McTominay almost certainly isn't going anywhere next year, but if he did, it's not a bad idea for Spurs to kick the tires a bit.
