It has only been a few months into his tenure as Tottenham Hotspur manager, but Thomas Frank, as touted as he was upon his arrival despite supporters' affinity for Ange Postecoglou, has already begun to wore out his welcome at the N17 with his cowardly approach to games tactically.
Frank committed a near unforgivable sin as manager against Arsenal FC on Sunday afternoon at the Emirates Stadium, lining up with an ultra conservative defensive approach and still getting blown out anyway. At no point during Spurs 4-1 drubbing at the hands of the Gunners did they look like they belonged on the same pitch as Mikel Arteta's men, as they were thoroughly outplayed and outcoached.
When Frank joined Tottenham as Big Ange's successor appointed by the now exiled Daniel Levy, the huge selling point was that Frank would bring a more pragmatic tactical approach to Spurs while still being every bit as exciting an innovative in the attack. He was brought on to be a calm, yet still charismatic, alternative to Postecoglou who could develop young players, integrate them, and whisper verses to attackers like Dominic Solanke and Richarlison as he did with Yoane Wissa, Bryan Mbeumo, Ivan Toney, and many more at Brentford.
Thomas Frank is a coward now
In watching how cowardly, inept in attack, and reliant on unexciting veteran players - like Richarlison and Rodrigo Bentancur - Spurs are, it's honestly hard for Tottenham fans not to wonder if Levy and the club's overall brass, which still remains, sold them a false bill of goods on Frank.
Instead of being an innovator who is making attacking players better, nurturing young talents, and modernizing Spurs into a team with a competent and organized midfield that can punch up to any club in the Premier League, Frank has turned Spurs into an almost sadistic joke of a viewing experience.
The home crowd has to restrain itself in order to avoid jeering the massacres they watch each week, as Spurs fail to create chances and are overrun in midfield despite actually setting up defensively. They are as ineffective as they were under Postecoglou in appearance and statistics while playing up this guise of being more organized, which is really just a funny way of saying unwatchable and cowardly. They are not hard to watch because they are as disorganized as they were under Ange, but they are hard to watch because they are so lethargic and uninspired while still being poor defensively.
