Tottenham supporters receive frustrating Cody Gakpo updates

We're days away from the start of the new season, and still no attacker has been signed this summer.

It's no secret that Tottenham Hotspur's priority transfer targets are currently Cody Gakpo and Savinho. We've known that since the start of August, with our interest in the latter dating back to last year.

However, the newfound ruthlessness with which we moved at the start of the window has disappeared. Frustratingly, these two deals seemingly hinge on the selling clubs bringing in replacements, and they've yet to be successful on that front.

While Liverpool are closing on on Paris Saint-Germain duo Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye, City have barely been linked with a wide player. After their midfield was run all over in the Community Shield, they're working on deals for Ayyoub Bouaddi and Enzo Fernández.

And the price keeps going up for Savinho. This was a £50m deal last summer; now he's being rated at £85m by the Cityzens, after a season where he barely played! It's bizarre, and on Tuesday we weren't exactly treated to the most promising Gakpo updates.

Reports suggest Gakpo to Tottenham won't happen this summer

Spurs insiders have led us to believe that personal terms have been agreed with the Dutchman, but that isn't the issue. Clubs are yet to reach a compromise over a transfer fee, and there are doubts that Liverpool would even be willing to sanction Gakpo's sale.

TalkSPORT's Alex Crook (via Hotspur Lane) doesn't believe the move will happen, with his sources on Merseyside suggesting that Gakpo is a player the club thinks new manager Andoni Iraola could get the best out of. The forward had a disappointing 2025/26 campaign, as did many of his teammates, but he ended preseason brightly.

On Sunday, he scored and assisted in the Reds' 2-0 win over Como.

If Spurs do strike a deal, expect us to be paying a huge fee. £70m has previously been discussed.

The Athletic understands that there haven't even been any negotiations between the two clubs, and adds that Liverpool's "not for sale" stance hasn't changed. However, I'm sure that'll soften should Barcola arrive at Anfield.

We're in the midst of an incredibly frustrating period in the transfer window, with activity on the incomings front moving at a snail's pace. Even the positive Savinho and Gakpo updates aren't to be believed, given the false dawns we've been subject to in the recent past.

Remarkably, it seems inevitable that Roberto De Zerbi's starting XI at Brentford won't include a single new signing in the frontline.
