The writing appears to be on the wall for Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero. Although Spurs were able to convince the World Cup winner to stay in the summer 2025 transfer window when he had offers on the table from Atletico Madrid and other big European clubs, this disaster of a 2025/26 season after firing Ange Postecoglou has only made Romero sour even more on the club. The office may be without Daniel Levy, but Romero and everyone else can see that the rot went further beyond the former Chairman.
Romero himself, though, did not exactly dignify himself positively this season. He was one of the best players on Tottenham again this season, but for a player who would like to see himself as one of the best center backs in the world, the Argentinian international wasn't quite at that level.
Tottenham will almost certainly be replacing Romero this summer transfer window by mutual agreement, barring an unexpected turn of events led by Roberto De Zerbi, and relegation from the Premier League would seal his departure.
Tottenham need a different profile
When it comes to replacing him, assuming Luka Vuskovic remains at Hamburg, Tottenham Hotspur need to go in the opposite direction. Cristian Romero is highly talented as an athlete and can make nice plays going forward, and he is a great ball winner. But in terms of reading the game, consistency, and defensive discipline, he came up lacking, which hurt Spurs in this relegation fight.
What Tottenham need at the back is someone who can read the game at an elite level. They need a pure defender who knows exactly when to step in, when to stay back, and how to lead a line. Romero was a lot of things, but tactically, he was weak, and it showed in how he led this team as a captain.
Tottenham need a defender in the mold of a player who is calm and disciplined off the ball. They need someone who almost never gets dribbled past and is focused less on making great passes down the field or boosting their own tackling numbers, and rather someone who understands how to defend as a team.
That is the key for Tottenham this summer. Romero was a great player for Spurs, especially in helping them win their first Europa League title in 41 years, but he just didn't have that ability to play safe and play smart that the truly elite center backs need, like the ones who led Tottenham in the 2000s and 2010s when they were a better side - guys like Toby Alderweireld and Ledley King.
