Tottenham are being heavily linked with big-money midfielder deals this summer, but they could save millions with a smart move. Spurs will lose Yves Bissouma this summer due to his contract expiring, and Roberto De Zerbi is likely to want an upgrade in any case.

De Zerbi is in the midst of overhauling his whole squad, and he is getting the money to do it. Spurs have already made four new signings, and they are likely to keep snapping up new talent over the next two months.

Tottenham midfielder chase ongoing

Spurs are pursuing a holding or hybrid midfielder this summer, with two targets currently leading the way. Tottenham have had a £75million offer for Newcastle United's Sandro Tonali rejected, and they are also pursuing West Ham star Mateus Fernandes as an alternative.

Fernandes is also likely to cost £80million or more this summer, so Spurs are set to spend huge money to solve their midfield issue, as many have before them.

Manchester City have just spent £116million to sign Elliot Anderson to play a similar role, and such midfielders have become central to the modern game, be it Rodri, Vitinha, Declan Rice or Moises Caicedo.

But while there are fancy and expensive options like Tonali and Fernandes, there are also options that can save Tottenham money this summer.

Spurs should consider Gueye

Whether it is instead of a pricey signing or an additional capture, Spurs should consider signing Villarreal and Senegal midfielder Pape Gueye. The 27-year-old has been superb for Villarreal over the last couple of seasons, playing a key role in them qualifying for back-to-back Champions League campaigns for the first time in their history.

Gueye also played a central role in Senegal's African Cup of Nations victory, although that is in dispute, of course. As holding midfielders go, there are few who cope so seamlessly with opposing players of any standard.

He is dominant on the ball, driving his team up the pitch, and that isn't even his biggest strength. Gueye's ability to break up play is extremely impressive, and his long frame certainly helps.

The Senegalese star, who is at the World Cup this summer, is already being linked with a move, and it's reported he will go for anywhere between 40million euros (£34.3million) and 60million euros (£51.7million) this summer.

Gueye won LaLiga's African Player of the Season in the season just gone, and Spurs would be wise to snap him up to fill that holding midfield role to save millions, even if they still go and add a more advanced player like Fernandes.
