Tottenham Hotspur ended up spending more than they would have liked on Savio - and more than anyone, even neutral observers would have thought. But Savio was pretty desperate to join Spurs as a new center piece player and to have the opportunity to be a regular, key player again, like he was at Girona when he got La Liga Player of the Season attention in 2023/24, and Tottenham themselves were even more desperate for an explosive and proven winger.
The Savio and Omar Marmoush double swoop has yet to pay dividends, but Savio, in particular, has looked special each time he has entered the pitch for Spurs, particularly with his goal and assist against Charlton Athletic to seal a League Cup victory.
Tottenham knew, when they agreed to pay Manchester City 85 million pounds for the versatile Brazilian winger, that they would be getting a massive upgrade to boost their team. But now, the extent of the Savio upgrade is becoming even clearer after Mathys Tel turned in a second straight stinker against Nottingham Forest.
Mathys Tel has gone from huge winner to loser
Tel emerged from the preseason as a huge winner, and he was so good in those friendly matches that some Tottenham Hotspur fans were wondering, as Manchester City continued to play hard to get and jacked up their Savio transfer price, if Tel should just take over as the starter on the left wing and Spurs pocket the money.
It turns out that not trusting Tel fully was the best possible decision that Roberto De Zerbi and Johan Lange could make, because even Tel as the No. 2 left winger option seems like a problem after how much he hurt the team against both Newcastle and Nottingham Forest, playing one of the biggest roles in the side failing to score in either match as five total points were dropped in the early battle for European places.
Savio is going to save Tottenham Hotspur even more points than they initially thought as an upgrade on Mathys Tel, because even though on the left wing as a left footer he may not carry as much theoretical scoring upside, it's not like the Frenchman has brought a whole lot of goals to Spurs since his transfer from Bayern Munich in the previous winter window.
Meanwhile, Savio is more secure in possession, better at chance creation, and just a smarter and more experienced footballer despite only being slightly younger. Spurs have to be excited for Savio starting every week.
