With how poorly Tottenham Hotspur have been playing over the last couple of months, literally winless in thier last 14, and with the team now sitting in the literal bottom three of the Premier League, the summer transfer window is very likely one of the last things on the minds of the Spurs faithful.
Yet the club themselves cannot have this mentality, and we all know how their poor foresight with finding a Thomas Frank replacement or having contingency plans in mind screwed them over in the long run and helped lead them into this mess.
So Spurs do need to plan ahead. Even if they are relegated and are taken out of the equation for the best transfer targets, who probably wouldn't be joining a 17th placed team in the Premier League without European football anyway, they will still need to retool a squad that will be headed for a sea of departures and ensure they have a better long term project that can get back to the English top flight - and actually succeed once in.
Alex Scott makes too much sense
To that end, Spurs need to sign talented, up and coming players who are hungry and believe in Tottenham. Bournemouth center midfielder Alex Scott has been on the Tottenham transfer radar already this season, but with the predicament Spurs are in, he is becoming a no brainer and the kind of signing who could fit the exact identity Spurs want to take on going forward.
After scoring a goal in the 74th minute to sink Tottenham Hotspur's arch rivals Arsenal 2-1 and cast more doubt on the Gunners Premier League title triumph, Scott spoke effusively about Tottenham, the club he has always loved since he was a child.
Alex Scott said of his goal against the Gunners, via the Daily Mirror's Ryan Taylor, "I support Tottenham. Growing up as a kid, it was definitely a dream for me [to score against Arsenal]. Bournemouth are my team at the minute but I was a Tottenham fan growing up, so as a kid, I would have been really happy with that."
Tottenham have been burned by a big Bournemouth signing before, Dominic Solanke, but Scott is younger, more dynamic, and more likely to translate to Spurs. He has been great this season in the midfield, and he would be achievable, even if Spurs were relegated, because he clearly loves the club. Plus, he would be a big upgrade on Conor Gallagher as a midfielder who can actually fight, create chances, and show quality with additional developmental upside. Spurs will be in even worse shape if they can't get Scott over the line.
