Totenham Hotspur opened up their check book and signed Sandro Tonali to a blockbuster 100 million pounds, making it the latest move in fulfilling the promise to Roberto De Zerbi when he signed his ambitious deal to join relegation threatened Spurs.

The club are offering the charismatic Italian manager a level of power and decision making over the club's transfers that is unprecedented, and not even huge names like Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho had this level of authority in the front office.

De Zerbi is utilizing it well so far, as Spurs have signed Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes, and now Tonali on big money deals, and the likes of Junior Eli Kroupi, Rafael Leao, Savinho, and even Marcus Rashford have been linked to Spurs in the attack.

Pape Matar Sarr looks destined to go

But as Spurs add, so they must also sell. Both Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali directly play in the same position as Rodrigo Bentancur, who is now demoted to the bench after these additions and does not have long term value to the squad like Archie Gray. But even a more box to box player who does have long term value, Lucas Bergvall, feels threatened by the new signings and has considered leaving Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

The player who stands out the most, though, as an exit is Pape Matar Sarr, who has already been linked away from Tottenham with Premier League clubs like Brentford interested in signing the Senegal international.

Sarr had a pretty high stock to start the 2025/26 season, playing surprisingly well under Thomas Frank and even shining brightly for the Senegal national team. But as the season went on, Sarr came quickly crashing back down to earth and was as ineffective as anyone by the end of the campaign, getting demoted in the squad after Tottenham signed Conor Gallagher in the winter.

Out of the midfielders Tonali, Fernandes, Gray, Bergvall, Bentancur, Gallagher, and Sarr who figure to get minutes at the base of the midfield behind No. 10's Xavi Simons and James Maddison, Sarr is last on the depth chart: seven out of seven.

Tottenham are probably not going to carry seven midfielders, and while Rodrigo Bentancur is probably expendable now, Roberto De Zerbi did take a liking towards him. He had no use for the skill set of Pape Matar Sarr, and now that he's added Tonali to Fernandes, Sarr stands out as the most likely next exit from the club.
