Tottenham Hotspur avoided the worst on Sunday, defeating Everton 1-0 on Matchday 38 of the 2025/26 Premier League season to save themselves from Premier League relegation on the same day that West Ham United defeated Leeds United 3-0.
But the time for celebrations is only brief, as Spurs have to be embarrassed that they needed to wait until the very last day to survive relegation - let alone even be in a relegation fight to begin with. Injuries and even controversial referee decisions have gone against Tottenham this season, but this entire campaign was a mess of their own doing, with the failed appointment of Thomas Frank playing a central role in Spurs descent to the relegation pit.
Now that Spurs are safe, though, there can be no rest, nor any excuse or pardon for the two architects who somehow made Tottenham significantly worse after the departure of long time chairman Daniel Levy, long pointed towards as the chief reason for Spurs chronic underperformance.
Tottenham need to clean up shop
CEO Vinai Venkatesham and acting sporting director Johan Lange have been beyond putrid this season, making a series of mistakes that led Tottenham to this point. Perhaps the Roberto De Zerbi hire was the one thing they got right, but it is hardly enough to make up for all the errors. The horrible winter transfer window, keeping Thomas Frank for as long as they did, and the mismanagement behind the scenes as well as poor - if not nonexistent - communication witih the supporters and the league during controversies have been huge blemishes on their records.
Tottenham Hotspur are apparently on the verge of bringing in Sebastian Kehl, recently fired by Borussia Dortmund in the same role for being horrible at his job, as the new sporting director with Johan Lange remaining in a prominent front office role. And that sounds like another major misstep for both VInai Venkatesham and Lange, who were so bad that Fabio Paratici actually bolted for Fiorentina in the winter transfer market.
Before it gets to that point, Spurs need to pull the plug and start afresh with more competent leaders who actually care about the club, can communicate effectively, and have real positive experience of leading organizations rather than failing miserably at clubs like Arsenal and Aston Villa that are now 10 times more successful without them. That has to be the first order of business, get rid of Lange and Vinai, before anything else can be done at Spurs this summer - anything with their fingerprints on them.
