Tottenham Hotspur are spending big this summer transfer window, making splash moves like never before to support new manager Roberto De Zerbi, who has accrued a ton of power to make decision both contractually and implicitly after leading Spurs to safety against some odds.

As Tottenham wrap up their big defensive and midfield additions, Spurs fans are hoping they will spend even more to secure true difference makers in an attack wherein only Richarlison scored double digit goals and only Mohammed Kudus truly created a sense of danger out wide.

Tottenham do have a number of intriguing pieces besides them, though. Dejan Kulusevski was one of the top Premier League wingers before his injury, Wilson Odobert showed real flashes before tearing his ACL, and Mathys Tel has the potential to be special.

Life will not get easier for Mathys Tel

Tel, in particular, is an intriguing case as the season begins. Touted enough that Bayern Munich spent big on him as a prospect from Rennes, the French left winger is still only 21 years of age despite being at the highest level of Europe for years.

But that is precisely the problem. Tel moved to big clubs too early. He mostly sat on the bench for Bayern behind bigger names and pretty did the same for Tottenham Hotspur, though he was good enough to play a key role in the 2024/25 Europa League title with Son Heung-min both injured and showing signs of decline by the end of the season.

Thomas Frank really dimmed his development in 2025/26, though. Tel was often Spurs most dangerous attacker, especially when they were at their worst in the second half of the season, but Frank screwed him over badly by barely playing him no matter how well he did.

Even though he is only 21, Mathys Tel is running out of time at Tottenham, and he had better hope that Roberto De Zerbi is, as he says, high on his talent. Because Spurs are already linked to Savinho and Cody Gakpo with whispers of Marcus Rashford and Rafael Leao. And if they sign Savinho along with one of Gakpo, Leao, or Rashford to make it two new left wingers, Tel will not only be third string on the depth chart, but he will also have to watch his back for Mikey Moore's future out wide.

Tel is fully COYS, works hard for the team, and has a lot of raw talent with a positive attitude to go and get goals. But Tottenham are playing for the highest standard of competing for trophies. Tel is not at the level of a starter for this kind of a club, and if he can become one, he won't sitting on the bench behind Gakpo and Savinho. He is in a tough spot, sadly.
